Magnum Photo

ARTSTOR, Italy, Sicily. Photo by Bruno Barbey. 1964.

This photo is an interesting example of documentary photography, particularly the photographer's juxtaposition between the nun as a subject and the poster behind her. We know this woman is a nun by her dress and habit, a rarely seen sight today (particularly in America) but a known symbol of goodness and piety. Behind her is the poster for the film "Lolita", a controversial film of Vladamir Nabokov's novel, which portrays the sexualization of an underaged girl. This photo tells the transition of old and new world in the 1960s, as well as the broader narrative of the role of women at the time.
